Dr. Jerry Young Highlights the Importance of the 2020 U.S. Census
Dr. Jerry Young — pastor of New Hope Baptist Church in Jackson, Mississippi, and president of the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc. — encourages all Mississippi residents to complete the 2020 United States Census. In a video message, Dr. Young discusses how he enthusiastically voiced his support for Mississippians to fill out their Census due to the massive impact an accurate Census has on our state, primarily achieved through increased funding for government programs.
“I discovered that for the past 10 years the state of Mississippi lost 13 billion dollars… because 250,000 Mississippians were not counted in the Census, and for every person who is not counted we lose $50,000: Mississippi cannot afford that.” Dr. Young continued, “That’s money for roads and bridges and highways and schools and for Head Start and for health care, for hospitals: you name it. That’s why we cannot afford to lose it.”
Dr. Jerry Young was born in Scott, Mississippi as one of 10 children born to Reverend E.L. and Elizabeth Young. Having grown up in the Mississippi Delta in the heart of the Civil Rights era, Young felt he was called by God to serve in the ministry at as young as seventeen. Serving at multiple churches throughout his life, Pastor Young now leads the New Hope Baptist Church. He received a Bachelor of Science in Sociology and Social Welfare from Rust College in Holly Springs, Mississippi, where he would meet and marry his future wife, Mrs. Helen Akins Young. Young later went on to receive a Master of Divinity and a Doctor of Ministry from Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson, Mississippi. On September 4, 2014, Dr. Young was elected president of the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc. during the 134th Annual Session held in New Orleans, Louisiana. He had served as vice president-at-large under the Julius R. Scruggs and William J. Shaw administrations. The Convention seeks to unite national Baptist churches and promote both mission efforts and education across the globe.
