Misinformation Being Circulated on Social Media Regarding the Census and Proposed Coronavirus Economic Aid Payments

The Mississippi Census would like to address the rumor circulating on social media that falsely claims that by completing your 2020 census you’ll receive $1,000 per adult and $500 per child in your household. This is misinformation and the two subjects are not related.

Recently President Trump addressed the nation in a press conference on March 17, 2020 asking Congress to release economic aid. This was regarding potentially direct checks to Americans in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, that aid has not been approved.

As US Government leaders and health officials continue their fight to contain the spread of the Coronavirus, the abundance of misinformation has limited their efforts. In a recent article addressing the spread of misinformation, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated “The top priority and focus for us has been making sure people can get access to good information and trusted sources during the pandemic.” He also stated that the company has a policy specifically to ban any false or misleading information about the US Census.

While it’s important for every Mississippian to complete their 2020 census for many reasons, including the fact that over the next 10 years, overall funding will be affected by our population count. The census doesn’t affect and is not related to any potential economic aid that individuals may receive as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. Help put to rest misinformation and rumors by spreading the word.
